Course Description

In the Subinternship, the student, like the intern, will have primary patient involvement but on a limited number of patients. As an integral member of the house officer team, the subintern will perform the initial patient evaluation and institute appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic measures under the direct guidance and supervision of the resident and attending physician. By allowing the student greater involvement in patient care and management than is possible in the basic clerkship, this experience will serve as a bridge between the basic clerkship and the internship year.

Due to the nature of the complete patient care responsibilities, the subintern will be expected to attend to these responsibilities every day during the rotation, including university holidays (except Thanksgiving and Christmas) and through the final day of the rotation. In order to maximize the experience, the department will assign the subintern to one of the university hospitals.

It is recommended that students interested in postgraduate programs in internal medicine take a subinternship in the first half of the year.
