MedEd Day 2021

September 17, 2021 was UPSOM’s 6th Annual MedEd Day, a chance for our community to come together to talk about medical education.  Dr. Karen Hauer from UCSF was the keynote speaker and presented innovative work both on coaching and on competency-based medical assessment.  There were excellent workshops on simulation education and departmental faculty development programs, and a wonderful poster session that featured many of our medical students, residents, and teaching faculty—presentations available on the school’s YouTube channel.  The Academy of Master Educators organized and ran the event, which was attended by almost 100 individuals.

Special recognition goes to our involved medical students, like:

  • Noel Carlos and colleagues who run our Pitt Med Student Mentorship Alliance (PMSMA) and showed high levels of mentor/mentee satisfaction
  • Sanya Yadav and colleagues who created a virtual fundoscopy curriculum for our advanced physicial exam class
  • Lily Berrin and colleagues who examined medical student comfort with evaluating older patients in emergency medicine settings
  • Devi Sai Sri Kavya Boorgu and colleagues who surveyed course directors about anti-racism content in preclinical courses, showing that a majority added theme content, and suggesting opportunities for further development
  • Greg Gorraiz, who assessed the utility of a spaced repetition application (ANKI) in preclinical learning
  • Paulomi Gohel and colleagues, who looked at peripheral nerve surgery trends across three clinical specialties
