Prepare an Exam

Writing exam questions can be a daunting process.  At UPSOM, this process is typically undertaken with the assistance of the faculty at the Office of Medical Education.  Specific considerations include decisions about the format of the exam (e.g., multiple choice questions, essays, or other formats) use of a locally prepared exam or one provided by the National Board of Medical Examiners, and the timing and method of administering the exam.  Techniques such as exam blueprinting, where a specific plan is laid out to present an exam that is comparable in its proportions to the areas that were emphasized during the course.

For specific assistance in preparing or revising a course examination process, please contact the Office of Medical Education at 412-648-8714.  Explore the links below for additional resources on exam preparation.
