Dean's Faculty Teaching Awards
Kenneth E. Schuit Award, Recognizing the Dean's Distinguished Medical Educators
This award recognizes basic science and clinical faculty for education-related contributions to the Pitt Med Curriculum. The Schuit Award is given in honor of our late colleague, Dr. Ken Schuit. He played a significant role in developing the new curriculum in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He was an outstanding teacher, recognized frequently with teaching awards.

Sheldon Adler Award for Innovation in Medical Education
This award recognizes individual achievement in innovation in medical education at UPSOM. This award is named for Sheldon Adler, MD, former senior associate dean of the School of Medicine. Dr. Adler is highly regarded as a leader in medical education and particularly in innovative approaches to the medical school curriculum. Dr. Adler was instrumental in developing and implementing the integrated UPSOM curriculum in 1992 and championed the cause of overcoming barriers to change.

Donald S. Fraley Award for Medical Student Mentoring
The award recognizes individuals for their outstanding contribution to medical education through their service as mentors to medical students at UPSOM. This award is named for the late Donald S. Fraley, MD, alumnus of the School of Medicine (Class of 1968), and past chair of the Curriculum Committee. Dr. Fraley was regarded as an outstanding mentor. He influenced the professional development of scores of medical students. By his actions, he contributed richly to the educational culture of the School of Medicine.

This award recognizes faculty who consistently provide outstanding clinical skills instruction for first and second year UPSOM medical students.

Award for Outstanding Professional Enrichment Course
This award, established in 2014, recognizes faculty who volunteer their time and expertise to run a Professional Enrichment Course (formerly mini-elective) for students. These courses provide students the opportunity to pursue areas of interest and personal growth in areas outside of the traditional core curriculum.

At the end of their first and second years, pre-clinical medical students at UPSOM recognize faculty educators for their valued contributions and dedication to teaching in the fundamentals of basic science and organ systems pathophysiology courses.
